There’d need to be two iterations of these characters since a fifteen-year gap in time will presumably separate The Handmaid’s Tale from The Testaments, of course, the show’s writers could continue to take creative liberties with Atwood’s characters.
That way Hulu can gauge fan reception of the leads who’ll be at the center of their follow-up series before throwing an entire spinoff together. The other intriguing bit revealed in the Entertainment Weekly exclusive was that Atwood’s latest book could play into the following season of The Handmaid’s Tale. She pointed out how Testaments may or may not influence the following season which means the show could jump forward in time. If you haven’t read the novels or seen season three, stop reading now.
Fans should, however, hold out hope for other mainstays of The Handmaid’s Tale to cameo in this continuation of the story. The sequel’s setting picks up more than 15 years after the end of Atwood’s original novel, which means June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) probably won’t be the lead protagonist in The Testaments series.
